Cannabidiol is a group compounds found in cannabis and hemp plants. Though highly mistaken for marijuana which contains the psychotic THC, CBD compounds are considered to be beneficial medically. In their pure form, CBDs are known to be non-psychotic (do not make people feel high). When taken with THC, their effects override that of THC and can thus be used to neutralize the ‘europhic’ effect of THC.

Effects

The CBDs are known to have effect on endocannabis system. This system is responsible for other body processes like movement disorder, appetite, mood, memory and circadian rhythms. It complements other systems to ensure that other internal body processes run smoothly. Due to its ability to interact with the said system, CBDs are widely medically used in treatment of various ailments (seizure, depression, anxiety, insomnia and physical pain).

Insomnia

This is a state of sleeplessness. This is normally caused by a number of factors: physical pain, depression, stress and anxiety. These factors are normally associated with some hormones and therefore affect the central nervous system and the brain. To diminish the effect of these hormones, CBDs are believed to reduce the production and concentration of these hormones in the body thus improving sleep patterns in the following ways:

Stress, Anxiety and Depression

Sleeplessness is caused by a hormone called cortisol. These three factors lead to production of more cortisol hormone in the body leading to less sleep. Research has shown that intake of CBD leads to decrease production of the cortisol hormone thus improving the sleep patterns. Further, CBD neutralizes the concentration of the cortisol in the body causing a reduction on their effect in the body. It is evident that more intake of this compound inhibits production and action of the cortisol hormone by greater percentage thus making it an ideal remedy for insomnia.

Physical Pain

The body produces its own endocanabinoids which help in pain reduction. The CBDs are able to bind to endocanabinoid system cell receptors therefore finding it easy to incorporate themselves very fast in the body making them vital complements in pain relieving. They influence production of anandamides, compound essential in regulating pain in the body. Additionally, the CBDs limit inflammation in the brain and CNS hence reducing pain and boosting immune system.

Even though CBDs importance on improving sleep patterns has been recorded, little has been presented scientifically on its negative effects on users. Minor cases of dependence, fatigue and loss of appetite have been recorded. This shows that CBDs are indeed beneficial to people with sleep disorder, its intake should be regulated to avoid abuse and other negative effects.

Conclusion

Increased use of CBDs should be limited as cases of impure CBDs which may contain illegal components (THC) with negative effects on consumers have been evident. This calls for strict adherence to the medics’ prescription and close supervision by law enforcers.

More studies should be conducted on the compound to scientifically cement its said effect on human body (appetite, mood and circadian rhythm).
